Spring Hops in Like a Kangaroo*

Or Is That a Wildebeest?

Well, that hell of a winter had one unintended consequence (assuming seasons can ever have intentions): There has never been a more welcome spring than this one! As I’m writing this, it is literally 72 degrees. Memories of the 29-inch snowfalls and 3-degree mornings are slowly melting away like a bad dream, which can mean only one thing: it’s time to get your ass to the Gym!

Spring Contest Kickoff

For the 17th time in 18 years, we kicked off our Spring Fitness Challenge. This year, there is a twist, a full 180-degree swivel back to our pre-Covid 4-person team format that we affectionately refer to as “The Fantastic Four.” We went full retro, bringing back the big cash prizes along with giant checks and a post-contest wrap party at The James in Babylon Village. 11 teams are just getting underway in what promises to be an exciting and challenging 12 weeks. Stay tuned to learn which team will reign supreme!

It Never, Ever, Gets Old at FI

We have a lot of upgrades happening in the Gym and the Spa, all designed for your personal enrichment. Here’s a quick rundown of the most significant ones.

New Equipment

Let’s start with the stationary cycles (pictured above). Our long-time favorite bikes from Expresso finally gave up on us and had to be retired. We’ve replaced them with two modern beauties from FreeMotion. Not only do these new bikes deliver a beautiful, comfortable ride, but they also have large-screen cycling courses and even classes that you can follow while you ride. Adding to the fun, the upright version actually ascends and declines with the on-screen course. Pretty cool. Try them out and let us know what you think.

Next up, the Rogue Echo Ski ERG, which we positioned near the door to the Queenax Room. This state-of-the-art industrial strength unit simulates cross-country skiing and is a helluva workout.

Also from Rogue is our new Rhino Belt Squat, located in the rack area of the weight room, along the Deer Park Avenue windows. This unit brings a core movement – squatting – to the masses. If you’ve experienced back, neck, or shoulder pain with traditional squats, give the Rhino a ride. Its advantage is that it puts far less stress on those sensitive areas, and also promotes better form while squatting.

Looking Good While We Do It

Complimenting our new equipment, we have some new looks, too. You may have noticed the entrance vestibule has gotten a big facelift: new black ceiling tiles, LED lighting, and a giant high-def info screen that lets you know what’s going on at your favorite Gym. We’re also in the middle of a major upgrade of Studio X, the big room, our main Group-Ex facility. We’ve blacked out the ceiling, and we’ll soon be installing new LED lighting, followed by a new floor later this Spring. And there’s more: Studio X is being fitted with a high-def camera system and instructor lighting to improve the quality of our video class content. Speaking of which…

Video Class Membership

With the upgrade of our filming capabilities, we will be offering a stand-alone video class-only membership, which is scheduled to premiere this April. Fear not – if you have a membership that includes classes, you’ll still have free access to our video classes. However, if you or someone you know has moved away and still yearns for a dose of FI class magic, well, now you can get your fix. The Video Class Only membership will be just $45 per month.
