PCOS Is Now PMOS:
What the Name Change Means and How Nutritionists Can Help
On May 12, 2026, The Lancet published a landmark global consensus study officially renaming the condition previously known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). PMOS impacts 1 in 8 women, which equates to more than 170 million women worldwide.
So why does changing one letter in the acronym matter? The name change reflects a broader understanding of the condition and how it affects the body beyond reproduction alone. The term “polycystic ovary syndrome” originated nearly a century ago when surgeons observed small follicles on a patient’s ovaries and mistakenly identified them as cysts. The exact criteria for the diagnosis were set in 1990, where a patient had to exhibit both ovulatory dysfunction and androgen excess (high male hormones). The criteria were then updated in 2003, requiring patients to meet two out of three features: ovulatory dysfunction, androgen excess, and polycystic ovaries on an ultrasound.
As I see it, there were two major problems with the original name:

The new name – Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome – was selected because it more accurately reflects an endocrine disorder, a metabolic disorder, and ovarian dysfunction, without reducing it to any single feature. For myself as a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist, this shift reinforces the critical role nutrition and lifestyle interventions play in managing symptoms and improving quality of life, instead of just having clients rely on a birth control prescription.
The new name, Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, better reflects what many practitioners have been seeing for years: this is not just an ovarian or fertility condition. PMOS affects multiple systems throughout the body, including insulin regulation, inflammation, metabolism, and hormone function. For many women, symptoms extend far beyond irregular periods or fertility struggles and can impact energy levels, weight regulation, cardiovascular health, and overall quality of life.

Why This Matters for Clients
Symptoms often affect energy, mood, appetite, and body composition. I’ve had many clients in my office with a PCOS diagnosis trying to lose weight and struggling more than they should based on what they are eating. By understanding the metabolic component, this can change the treatment approach. Published data indicate that insulin resistance affects approximately 60-75% of women with the condition, and metabolic syndrome prevalence reaches up to 56% in some study populations. Historically, clinical focus has been disproportionately on fertility and reproduction. This means serious health problems, including insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk, and liver disease, can have been missed for years.

Supporting Clients with PMOS
I’ve worked with clients with PCOS in the past, and this name change doesn’t necessarily change my overall approach. However, my hope is that with more healthcare professionals approaching the condition differently, clients will feel more supported treating their symptoms through a whole-body approach rather than viewing it strictly as a reproductive disorder.
In the past, many clients with this condition have felt confused by their diagnosis and overwhelmed by how to manage their symptoms. From a nutrition standpoint, treatment often needs to be individualized. Factors like insulin resistance, appetite regulation, lab work, lifestyle, stress, and eating patterns can all influence symptoms differently from person to person.
While the name has changed, many of the challenges women experience with PMOS remain the same. My hope is that this shift encourages earlier screening, broader conversations around metabolic health, and more comprehensive support for women dealing with the condition.
