“When someone is doing “everything right” and still doesn’t feel well, sometimes we need to look deeper.”

When Symptoms Are Only the Beginning:

Getting to the Root Cause

Fatigue. Weight gain. Hormonal changes. Digestive issues. Acne. Constipation. Brain fog. Fertility struggles.

We often think of these as separate problems requiring separate solutions. But in functional wellness, we ask a different question:

What if the symptom isn’t the problem—but a clue?

At The Root Cause Solution, our philosophy is centered around investigating why the body may be struggling rather than simply chasing individual symptoms. Over the years, we have found that some of the most overlooked contributors to chronic health concerns include environmental and infectious burdens such as mold and mycotoxins, heavy metals, parasites, and viruses.

These aren’t the only factors that influence health. Gut dysfunction, nutrient and mineral deficiencies, chronic stress, hormonal changes, poor sleep, blood-sugar dysregulation, and diet can all play important roles. But when someone is doing “everything right” and still doesn’t feel well, sometimes we need to look deeper.

When Fertility Wasn’t Just About Hormones

One of our clients was a 30-year-old woman struggling with hormonal symptoms and, most importantly, she wasn’t ovulating.

She had already seen a fertility specialist and had been told that IVF would likely be necessary for her to become pregnant. But before moving forward, she wanted to understand one thing:

Why wasn’t her body ovulating in the first place?

Our investigation uncovered significant inflammatory and environmental concerns consistent with mold exposure. Rather than focusing solely on reproductive hormones, we spent approximately six months addressing her overall health, supporting detoxification pathways, and reducing her environmental burden.

After completing her protocol, follow-up testing showed improvement in the marker we had been monitoring. She then took an ovulation test.

She was ovulating.

She and her husband tried to conceive naturally—and became pregnant on their first attempt.

Her story is a powerful reminder that reproductive health doesn’t exist in isolation. The gut, immune system, environment, stress response, nutrient status, and hormones are interconnected.

When Weight Gain Had an Unexpected Clue

Another client, a 46-year-old perimenopausal woman, came to us after suddenly gaining a significant amount of weight. At her age, it would have been easy to blame everything on perimenopause. Instead, we investigated further.

Her bloodwork revealed a markedly elevated mercury level. We focused on an anti-inflammatory diet, reducing potential exposure and supporting the body’s normal detoxification and elimination pathways.

During her first month, she lost 16 pounds.

That doesn’t mean mercury is responsible for everyone’s weight gain—or that detoxification is a weight-loss program. It demonstrates why individualized testing can sometimes reveal factors that wouldn’t otherwise be considered.

The Gut, Parasites and Pregnancy

Another young woman came to us newly married and hoping to start a family. Testing identified two parasites.

After completing a targeted gut protocol, she contacted us with incredible news: she had multiple positive pregnancy tests.

Again, we cannot say that treating parasites “caused” the pregnancy. Fertility is extraordinarily complex. But her experience illustrates why gastrointestinal health and overall wellness deserve consideration when looking at the whole person.

Sometimes the Answer Is Minerals

Not every root cause is exotic.

One 30-year-old client had struggled with constipation for most of her life. Instead of simply adding another laxative or bowel supplement, we evaluated her nutritional and mineral status.

By working to replenish and rebalance those minerals, we were finally able to help support regular bowel movements.

We’ve seen the same principle in clients dealing with immune and inflammatory conditions. In one 41-year-old woman, addressing gastrointestinal dysfunction and identifying foods that appeared to trigger inflammation became an important part of improving her autoimmune symptoms and overall quality of life.

Test. Don’t Guess.

This is why functional wellness is so individualized.

Two people can walk through our doors with the exact same symptom and have completely different underlying contributors.

Depending on the individual, our investigation may include comprehensive blood chemistry, stool testing, hormone testing, mineral analysis, environmental toxin testing, and other specialized diagnostic labs.

From there, a personalized plan may incorporate nutrition, lifestyle changes, targeted supplementation, gut support, stress and sleep strategies, and, when appropriate and medically supervised, advanced therapies.

The goal isn’t to “detox” everyone or blame every symptom on mold, metals, or parasites. The goal is to gather clues, connect the dots, and understand what may be preventing the body from functioning at its best.

Your symptoms are information.

Instead of only asking, “What can I take to make this symptom go away?” consider asking a different question:

“Why is my body producing this symptom in the first place?”

That question is where root-cause investigation begins.

At The Root Cause Solution, we help clients investigate the possible underlying contributors to their symptoms through comprehensive testing and individualized wellness strategies—so they can stop guessing and start understanding their bodies.

Because sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes when you stop chasing the symptom and finally start asking why.
