Frizz or Curls?

Got Frizz?

Maybe It’s Just Curly Hair!

Does any of the following sound familiar? Dull, frizzy, poofy, uncontrollable, dry, or untamable hair? How about always having to blow out or use a heat tool to look halfway presentable?

There might be a simple and surprising explanation. You’ve got curls! When curls are not treated correctly, the results can be exactly what is described above. Curls need specific products, routine, and care that differ from straighter hair. When allowed to dry naturally and then brushed out, curls will not look their best.

To see if this describes you, the next time you have your hair wet and detangled, try cupping your hand at the bottom of your hair and squeezing with an upward “scrunching” motion. If you have natural curls, this simple motion will encourage them to take their natural form, either a spiral or a wave. Or sometimes a mixture of both!

Now What?

If this is you, now what? There needs to be both a change in your products and in your routine. This can take some practice and experimenting. Consider this as a good place to start: The next time your hair is freshly shampooed, conditioned, rinsed, and detangled, take a product (There are many creams, lotions, gels, and mousses specifically for your hair!) and use that same scrunching motion to distribute it evenly throughout your hair. Your hair should be wet enough at this point that when you scrunch, it makes a “squelching” sound. If not, no problem, just add more water.

Okay, what’s next?

You have 2 options. You may air-dry your hair if you’re not pressed for time, or you may dry your hair with a diffuser attachment. The diffuser method is quicker and produces a more voluminous result.

After your hair has dried, either by diffusing or air-drying, the curls should have a “cast”, a crunchy coating that defines each curl. If your desired outcome is more of a softer curl, the last step is “scrunching the crunch out”. You may do this step with dry hands or some hair oil warmed in your palms. Use the same cupping or scrunching motion to break that cast, leaving the curls softer and more natural-looking.
