According to a recent study, the average American spends over two hours each week food shopping, two hours each week on miscellaneous errands, and two hours each week on phone calls. More often than not, parents are working all day, then running from activity to activity after work, leaving little to no time to get stuff done. It is often pushed to the weekends, as studies confirm supermarkets and shopping malls are busiest on Saturdays and Sundays! This leaves little to no time or energy for family bonding.
Technology, designed to assist us, only compounds the issue. The author of the book “Disconnected,” Tom Kersting, cites a disturbing study that finds the average American family engages in just 3 minutes of meaningful conversation per day! Melissa Resnick knows this all too well. As a young child, she vividly remembers her Sunday rituals of family fun sans mom! “Sunday mornings were for waking up early, eating a huge breakfast, and heading out for the day as a family,” she recalls. “But my mom was never with us on those family outings, and I guess I never thought too much of it. Now that I’m older, and a busy single mom of four, I realize that while we were out as a ‘family,’ my mom was busy getting all her errands done.”
Melissa’s mom worked 40+ hours a week, so she used Sunday’s for running around to get all her to-do list items done before her workweek began. Family is everything to me, and I try my best to raise my own children with that mindset.
